TL;DR
Entity resolution is the step where a system decides that a website, a map listing, a directory profile and a mention in an article all refer to the same business. It is a gate, not a score. Passing it does not make you rank. Failing it means your other work is split across several half-identities and none of them wins.
The fix is boring and specific: one name, one description, one location story and one set of profile links, used the same way everywhere a machine can read them.
Why "ranking factor" is the wrong frame
Most SEO advice treats every signal as something that adds points. Entity resolution doesn't work like that. A system first has to decide what the thing is before it can decide whether that thing is a good answer. If it can't decide, it doesn't rank you lower. It simply has nothing reliable to rank.
Google's own guidance makes a similar point about E-E-A-T: it says E-E-A-T is not itself a specific ranking factor, but a description of what its systems try to reward. Entity clarity sits in the same category. It is a condition for being evaluated, not a lever that moves you once you are.
What breaks resolution in practice
The failures are rarely dramatic. They are small contradictions that accumulate: an old office address left in structured data, a founder listed under three versions of their name, a directory profile with a different phone number, a company name written as one word on the site and two words on a listing.
We found this on our own site. An October 2026 crawl of backtier.com showed structured data still naming cities BackTier has never operated from, and several name variants for its founder. For a company that sells entity clarity, that was a direct contradiction, and we removed it. The point isn't that we were careless. It's that this kind of drift happens to every site that has been edited for more than a year.
The resolution checklist
Pick one canonical name and use it everywhere, including in structured data. If you need to acknowledge a variant spelling, do it on one explanatory page, not in every profile.
Write one sentence that says what the business is, where it is and who leads it. Use that sentence verbatim on your site, your map listing and your main directory profiles.
List only verified, authoritative profiles in your sameAs links. A scraper directory that copied you badly is not a profile you control.
Keep one location story. If you work remotely from one region, say that, and remove offices you don't have.
How to tell if it's working
Ask several AI assistants the plain questions: what is the business, where is it, who runs it. Log every name and location in the answers. A contradiction may come from many sources; do not assume its cause without a controlled test. In a dated five-model comparison on our Experiments page, three of five models stated a wrong BackTier city (San Francisco, Montreal, Aachen) and three misidentified Jason T Wade as an unrelated musician. That confirms contradictions are live across models today; it is not proof of what caused them, and we have no comparable pre-cleanup run. The exact answers are published with the comparison.
